Music platforms, streaming services, and production companies rack up hundreds of billions of dollars in value for their board rooms, while the artists who create the content often see none of the profits.
What if these media services were structured as cooperatives? It’s already happening and is providing us with a vision for a world where creators own the work they produce and audiences help shape the platforms.
On Saturday, July 26th, Cooperation STL will host a Co-op Skillshare focused on how new media co-ops are structuring their work, and how you can join this movement.
We’ll be joined by Austin Robey of Subvert, a cooperative working to build an online marketplace where artists and labels can sell music and merchandise directly to their supporters. Austin will provide insight into Subvert's unique model that is owned and controlled by its community of artists, labels, supporters, and workers. After brief presentations, Cooperation STL will facilitate a Q+A session. Bring your questions about how cooperative models can be applied to your ideas for new ways to bring content, media, art, and more to your community.
About Co-op Skillshares: Join current cooperators and excited enthusiasts in St. Louis to celebrate our local knowledge about cooperatives. Co-op Skill Shares are an opportunity to connect with local folx who are also interested in how the co-op model can be used to bring equity, democracy, and resilience to our community. Each skill share will feature an informal presentation from a local cooperator and time to create new connections and friendships within our co-op ecosystem.
